Beyond People-Pleasing: How to Handle Criticism and Define Success on Your Own Terms

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my journey, it’s that success is rarely a straight line. I do still see myself as a work-in-progress. My path has been tumultuous, often straying from conventional routes, but each step taught me more than any textbook could.
Last week, we had an in-person briefing with the event organisers, including two inspiring volunteers from MENDAKI Club, Zulhilmi Zainal and Ella Badis. I deeply admire them for dedicating their personal time and energy to giving back to the community. And, of course, not forgetting Amalina Abdul Nasir, for this kind invitation.
And, as things often go with me, my chat with Shahrin Abdol Salam, PBM took an unexpected turn as we walked to the building’s carpark. Our conversation veered towards more interesting territory, but these kinds of conversations—on and off the record—are a reminder of the diverse perspectives we all carry. Each of us has unique opinions and approaches for improving the system; sometimes, it’s just about absorbing those ideas and reflecting on how we can do better, for ourselves and for others.
The people-pleaser in me always struggles to stay true to myself—which is the hardest part, especially when others disagree with my path or challenge my decisions. I tend to internalise criticism deeply, which makes it even harder to hold my ground.
At this Meet The Leaders event, I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned—to be comfortable with discomfort—and why success should be defined by you, not others. At the end of the day, you set your own glass ceiling. Since this event is aimed at mid-senior working professionals, I know there will be plenty of wisdom to exchange and reflect on.
